Have you ever felt like your goals were just out of reach, no matter how much you wanted them? I’ve been there too—struggling to turn my dreams into reality despite planning and effort.
One ritual completely transformed my approach to life and growth: creating a compelling vision board. It’s simple, yet powerful—and it’s not just about listing achievements. It’s about aligning your mindset, behavior, and emotions with the life you truly desire.
For example, in 2024, this practice helped me:
✨ Win a freediving competition 🏆 ✨ Run workshops solo and with other coaches ✨ Restart hobbies I love, like high-heel dance and boxing 🥊 ✨ Get physically stronger than ever ✨ Support clients’ transformations through my coaching practice ✨ Launch The HERitage Show with Ling Shi podcast to amplify Asian women’s voices
The key takeaway isn’t the specific achievements—it’s how creating a clear, compelling vision of your life can shape your actions, mindset, and growth.

My Step-by-Step Vision Board Process
Here’s how I bring my vision to life, and how you can too:
1️⃣ Visualize the Feeling, Not Just the Object
Instead of focusing on numbers, titles, or objects, tune into the feeling you want to embody: confidence, freedom, vitality, curiosity, or joy. Neuroscience shows that emotional visualization activates the same neural networks as actual experience, making your brain more likely to notice opportunities and act in alignment with your goals.
2️⃣ Write It Down with Clarity
Capture your desired experiences, growth, and emotions in writing. Define areas like career, health, relationships, hobbies, or personal growth. Writing makes your vision tangible and actionable, while reinforcing your subconscious mind.
3️⃣ Break It Down into Milestones and Actions
Instead of attaching your goals to outcomes, focus on behaviors and habits that embody your vision. For example: instead of “be famous,” write “practice daily, share knowledge consistently.” This trains your brain to act as if you already are the person you want to become.
4️⃣ Bring Your Vision to Life Visually
Collect images, quotes, or AI-generated visuals that reflect how it feels to live this vision, not just the external objects. Neuroscience supports that visualization combined with emotion strengthens neural pathways, helping your unconscious mind align with your intentions.
5️⃣ Leverage the Brain’s Prime Time
Spend a few minutes just before and after waking up, when your brain is in a theta and alpha wave state, to revisit your vision. This is when the subconscious mind is most receptive, allowing you to plant intentions that influence behavior throughout the day.
6️⃣ Share Selectively for Accountability
Share your vision with people you trust—mentors, friends, or coaches. Accountability helps reinforce commitment without creating pressure to meet expectations.
7️⃣ Take Action Without Attaching to Outcomes
The magic of a vision board isn’t wishful thinking—it’s about showing up, taking consistent steps, and embodying your vision, without obsessing over immediate results.
8️⃣ Reflect on What Doesn’t Manifest
Not all items on your vision board will come true—and that’s part of the growth process. These “missed” goals often reflect evolving priorities or a new path, signaling the need to explore alignment and recalibrate your intentions.
Key Learnings From My Vision Board Practice
Looking back, I realized:
The most important element is feeling and emotion, not the object or number.
Old patterns and limiting beliefs often need to be released to truly embody the vision.
Vision boards work best when combined with behavior change, mindset shifts, and consistent practice.
Your subconscious mind can be trained, but it needs daily reinforcement, reflection, and emotional engagement.
Vision and Burnout Prevention
Burnout is often deeper than overwork or a difficult boss. It frequently occurs when you no longer fit in your environment or path, whether because you’ve changed, your environment has changed, or both.
This is why exploring inward and uncovering your heart’s true calling is essential. Crafting a compelling vision:
Helps you prevent burnout
Guides you to pivot toward a life aligned with your authentic self
Supports clarity, motivation, and purposeful action
Take Action: Manifest Your Vision and Prevent Burnout
Some people think vision boards “don’t work”—but it’s not about doing the board wrong. It’s about what you do and who you become after creating it. This requires guidance, practice, and support.
